Hydra
Story Appearances: Tyrantis vs. MechaTyrantis, Pathogen the Undead Monstrosity, Tyrantis: Area 51 Unleashed, Tyrantis’s Finale
Height: Varies, although he generally “stands” 50 meters (164 feet) tall (snakes aren’t very vertical creatures)
Weight: 44,000 tons
Length 300 meters (988 feet)
Physical Appearance: tyrantisterror.deviantart.com/art/Lerna-s-Hydra-62440011
Origin: Hydra was genetically engineered to be a perfect anti-kaiju weapon. Citing Japan’s example in the first age of giant monsters, a batch of scientists made this serpent to be a tame guardian of the east coast. Hydra was designed and trained to subdue other kaiju with as little collateral damage as possible, paralyzing them so they may be taken to an uninhabited location (generally Tyrantis’s Island).
Hydra got to prove its worth when Tyrantis and Spinonyx, angered by a recent assault upon their island by another anti-kaiju weapon, appeared in San Francisco in 2040. While Hydra initially allied himself with the anti-kaiju weapon, he eventually went to Tyrantis’s aid after seeing his noble defense of Spinonyx. The three defeated the weapon and returned to Tyrantis’s island, where Hydra stayed for the majority of his life.
Personality: Hydra is rather stoic and reserved, watching other kaiju with quiet, analytical eyes. Hydra is like the smart, quiet kid in a classroom who might just snap any day, with his violent outbursts being short, sudden, and utterly unexpected. Thankfully Hydra is relatively sane and is just as willing to end conflicts with negotiation as he is with violence.
Special Abilities:
Enhanced Intelligence- Each of Hydra’s heads thinks roughly on a human level, having been conditioned and trained by human beings as an anti kaiju weapon. While each head has its own separate consciousness, the center head is able to override all the others’ control of its body if need be.
Regeneration- Hydra basically has a nigh instantaneous healing power similar to that of Godzilla. However, if any of Hydra’s heads are severed, two more will grow in their place. This can continue up to twenty-eight heads, although the extra heads will eventually wilt and die withing an hour or so, leaving Hydra with his original seven heads (one cobra in the center, two rattlesnakes flanking the cobra, and four pythons outside the three venomous heads). In addition, if the center head is severed, all the other heads will die automatically. Any severed head will regenerate a new body, growing a mature body with seven new heads in about a month.
Heat Vision In addition to eyes, Hydra's rattlesnake heads have heat sensing pits that give him heat vision. This allows him to see warmblooded creatures (or anything else with a lot of heat inside, such as high powered mecha) no matter what the physical conditions are in the outside world.
Venom- Hydra’s cobra head's venom is a deadly, ever changing mixture of toxins that specifically attack the nervous system, used to paralyze prey rather than outright kill them. It even works on kaiju that can heal their nervous tissue (like Godzilla or Tyrantis), albeit for a shorter amount of time. The cobra head can also spit venom to blind opponents for a brief period of time. Its rattler heads have haemotoxic venom, which damages opponents instead of paralyzing them. This damage is rarely fatal, but incredibly painful.
Constricting Coils- Hydra’s coiling body is strong enough to crush boulders and shatter highly armored machinery.
Combat Style: Hydra, like all snakes, is a very strategic fighter. He chooses every move he makes very carefully and carries them out in such a swift manner that it’s almost impossible to predict them. Hydra generally uses his venom to slow down his prey so he can crush them with his coils. While this restricts him to close quarters, Hydra does have a long-range attack that allows him to disorient foes long enough for him to slither over and attack them.
Strengths and Weaknesses: Hydra’s venom and coils are strong enough to subdue most kaiju, and his several heads allow him to see most attacks that come at him. His heads are also capable of delivering nasty bites even without venom.
Hydra’s analytical nature can be a problem, however, as he is somewhat incapable of thinking on his feet. He generally compensates this by thinking very, very far ahead, but if he makes a big mistake he may never regain the lead in battle. His healing factor can be overcome if his brains are destroyed, and he doesn’t have a lot of strong body armor. If his center head is severed his body will immediately die, although the center head will live and eventually grow a new body. Hydra doesn’t exhaust easily, but he can be made to pass out if a battle rages long enough. Also, as a cold-blooded creature he is at a disadvantage when faced with low temperature conditions. While his regeneration keeps him from dying in the cold, it can’t prevent him from becoming sluggish or, in particularly extreme cold weather, going into torpor.
Sample Fight: Hydra’s heads swayed from side to side as he slithered out of the San Francisco Daikaiju Museum. A giant monster was laying waste to the city and he was the only force in the city that could stop it. His seven tongues flicked out of his mouth to taste the air. He soon detected his prey: down by the beach. The serpent quickly set off, his heads writhing fluidly to spot the threat.
Titanosaurus wandered around the beach. His alien masters had sent him here to destroy things, but the creature’s gentle nature wasn’t exactly geared towards destruction. He vainly kicked at some small buildings before detecting movement in the city. He looked to see Hydra staring at him. The snake’s heads rose in unison as he swung his tail forward. Rapid clicks emanated from the tip of the serpent’s tail, making Titanosaurus nervous. Terror struck him when the central head, crested with a three horn crown and having several bladed spikes running down each side of its neck, slithered into midair and spread its hood like the wings of a primordial demon. The gargantuan snake slithered toward the dinosaur with speed that did no fit its enormous bulk and let out seven distinct and threatening hisses.
The fear that struck Titanosaurus unleashed the rage he had previously been unable to muster. With a shrill cry he charged the serpent. The four python heads at the end of each side of Hydra’s body flicked their tongues out as the top three swayed threateningly. Titanosaurus blinked once, missing the second where one of the creature’s three center heads darted towards his face and sank its fangs into his snout. His body became numb and incredibly weighted as his muscles became inanimate objects. Everything slowed down as the two heads closest to the center one struck again and again, stabbing his face. He felt searing both pain and complete numbness together as the world became blurry. A booming hiss filled his ears as the two heads stopped their onslaught. The center head, with its horned crown and demonic hood, lowered itself to his level and looked him straight in the eye. In an instant it spat venom in his eyes. A loud cry for help drooled out of the crimson monster’s jaws as the serpent coiled around him.
One of the python heads unhinged its jaws to swallow the dinosaur but stopped at a stern hiss from the center. The six heads heard their leader’s thoughts about how hard it would be to swallow the creature’s spine and the all too possible event of the creature waking up in their belly and tearing itself out. They agreed and left the reptile alone.
Thinking the battle was over, Hydra began to leave only to feel missiles tear into his back. All seven of the serpent’s heads whipped around and spotted a flying metal monster in the sky. MechaGodzilla landed a few meters away and struck a fighting stance with his missile tipped fingers pointed at Hydra menacingly. Hydra hissed, took a brief moment to plan an attack, and then charged the metal behemoth. MechaGodzilla released another volley of missiles onto the serpent. Chunks of its flesh were blasted off yet failed to stop Hydra’s onslaught. Even the decapitation of his two rattlesnake heads failed to stop the snake’s charge. If MechaGodzilla could feel surprise he would have jumped when four more heads sprouted in the fallen two’s place just in time to help the great serpent wrap around the mech.
It was like watching a man grapple with nine snakes at once. Hydra’s many heads all tried to wrap around MechaGodzilla as the machine desperately fought to throw it off. He sliced off a few more heads only to have twice their number spring out and join the attack. The robot tried to repel his aggressor with his flame breath, but the snake shrugged off the scorched scales and continued his assault. The mechanical monster’s laser eyes didn’t fare much better, managing only to sever more heads, a tactic that was proving more and more detrimental.
Hydra’s coils began to crush MechaGodzilla’s body, cracking the almost unbreakable space titanium and doing irreparable damage to the circuits it protected. In a last ditch move of self preservation, MechaGodzilla fired all his missiles at one. Hydra’s body was torn to pieces by the onslaught, severing the center head in the process. MechaGodzilla roared in victory only to feel a rumbling in its chest. Seconds later it exploded from internal damage.
Seconds later the surviving heads, each having grown a new, slimmer version of their original body, met each other in the streets. In a month or so they would all be full, mature hydras, and San Francisco would have its old protector back ten fold.
