Origin: In 2005 the soft tissue of a Tyrannosaurus rex was discovered. This paleontological breakthrough sent shockwaves through many members of the scientific community, and soon enough someone decided to try and clone a dinosaur.
Flash forward to 2017. The project, secretly funded by the government and a handful of corporations, was successful in not only cloning a T.rex, but roughly seventy other species of dinosaurs as well. The prehistoric beasties inhabited a relatively large and hitherto unknown island nicknamed Typhon Isle. News of the island leaked out to the public and was met with a primarily negative reaction. Many of the financial backers pull out, leaving the scientists crippled financially and the government desperately trying to save face. In attempt to salvage some use for the project, the army uses the dinosaurs as test subjects for a new type of virus. This virus, codenamed Omega Virus D, was originally supposed to be a super soldier serum, but none of the test subjects that were more complicated than a jellyfish were able to survive it. It tested poorly as a weapon as well, but at least the dinosaurs were all dead, being left to rot on the forgotten island.
Or so the government thought.
Roughly 20 of the island’s species had been breeding when the virus was tested on them. Many of the eggs had trouble developing in the wild (temperatures were much higher in the Mesozoic than they are now), with the embryos within the eggs sill being rather simple organisms. When the virus was injected into the eggs, they didn’t die, but rather mutated as the virus intended them to. The serum was designed to give them all the mutated genes of a Japanese monster that was buried in a glacier back in 1956, and thus the dinosaurs grew much as that monster had grown, becoming roughly ten times their normal size. They gained many of its fantastic abilities, but only one of them had mutated enough to get the full package.
Tyrantis quickly established himself as the king of the island, defeating any and all challengers for his title from early infancy. He even defeated a male of his own species for the right to mate with the only female tyrannosaur on the island, forcing the male to leave the entire landmass.
This proved to be a bad move in the long run, as the defeated male eventually wound up in San Francisco. It made a big mess before, somewhat ironically, being shot by the army’s latest biological weapon: the Omega Virus G. Analysis of the comatose monster’s body revealed its origin, and soon Tyrantis’s island was discovered. The events that followed led Tyrantis into many adventures and battles with other kaiju across the planet. Yet no matter how many times the tyrannosaur fought, the outcome was always the same: victory for Tyrantis.
Personality: Having a brain capable of human intelligence doesn’t make Tyrantis a civilized being. Tyrantis acts very much like a Viking warlord; he loves the thrill of battle and respects bravery on the battlefield even more than prowess. Tyrantis can be negotiated with and generally tries to do the right thing (to an extent, since he’s never been taught what the right thing is) and is not the kind of kaiju that destroys things without a purpose. Tyrantis only fights for food or to protect his family, territory, and life (although he’ll spar with other kaiju for funsies).
Special Abilities:
Enhanced Intelligence- Tyrantis is smarter than the average tyrannosaur, possibly having the capacity for a human level of intellect.
Regeneration- Tyrantis has a healing rate that is only slightly less powerful than Godzilla’s, being able to replace complex structures like limbs or vital organs nigh instantaneously. This isn’t to say he’s invincible, however, as Tyrantis’s central nervous system heals significantly slower (although it still heals, unlike that of a normal animal, and heals relatively fast at that). Enough blunt trauma to Tyrantis’s brain can knock him out, and completely destroying about 75% his brain will kill him, although the latter is quite a task considering how armored his skull is.
Improved Strength- Tyrantis is stronger than the average tyrannosaur, even if they were equal to his size. His neck muscles are particularly well developed since Tyrantis has a tendency to grab opponents with his jaws and toss them around.
Bone-crushing Bite- Tyrantis’s jaws are strong in every aspect, from the bone that makes them to the muscles that move them. With one focused bite he is able to crush things as strong as bone and even metal.
Fire Breath- Using a group of currently unnamed internal organs, Tyrantis can breathe fire. His fire breath is triggered by feelings of anger and stress, and gets progressively stronger the more P.O.ed he becomes. It’s a rather versatile weapon, as Tyrantis has used it multiple ways: breathing fire balls, rays of flame, biting a foe and breathing fire into the wound (which causes a sizable explosion within the opponent’s body), using the fire to enhance his locomotion (using the fire to propel him into the air, turning around an using it like a jet engine to pus him forward swiftly, etc.), and (on incredibly rare moments when rage absolutely overpowers him) bathing his opponent and everything else within a half mile radius in flame. Despite its many uses, Tyrantis rarely employs this ability in battle. He prefers to fight tooth and claw and often saves his fire breath for a finishing blow or to get himself out of a tight situation.
Combat Style: Tyrantis primarily a tooth and claw fighter, with an emphasis on the word “tooth.” Since Tyrantis lacks large, powerful arms, he often uses his head in their place. He’ll grab and toss foes with his powerful jaws and neck muscles or headbutt kaiju with his heavily armored (and horn covered) noggin. That’s not to say his other body parts are underused, as Tyrantis will fight with any and all weapons at his disposal. Tyrantis generally takes the offensive, being a predator by nature, and shows a great amount of ingenuity when it comes to fighting. He generally thinks on his feet while fighting instead of strategizing before hand because it’s more fun that way. As stated before, Tyrantis reserves his strongest weapons for tight spots or the end of his battle, as he feels using them early on is cheap.
Strengths and Weaknesses: Tyrantis is best suited to close range combat. While he does have a suitably powerful ranged weapon, Tyrantis instinctively prefers to fight close to his opponents and feels more comfortable ripping into them with his jaws. His “think on your feet” style of fighting makes him rather adaptable in combat situations, making his moves hard to predict. He’s also a wonderful team player that will go out of his way to help his allies in a fight.
Tyrantis is weak against smaller, faster opponents, as speed is not exactly his strong suit. Tyrantis was designed to take out creatures that are roughly equal to himself in terms of size, and as such he often ignores smaller opponents. Tyrantis can be a bit thingyy as well. Of course, his biggest weakness lies in his greatest weapon: his head. Tyrantis’s brain is his Achilles heel. He can be knocked out by repeated heavy blows to the brain, and if a foe manages to destroy a vast amount of that organ he will expire. Tyrantis can also get exhausted by long fights to the point of passing out, although this happens rarely. Tyrantis’s fire breath also offers a weak point, although when it is exploited Tyrantis becomes very dangerous. If angered beyond the capacity for rational thought, Tyrantis will spew forth a virtual inferno of flame (this attack was described in the special powers section). This attack leaves Tyrantis exhausted and often does severe damage to his jaws. Theoretically it could even damage his brain, although this has yet to happen. If a foe could instigate this attack they would most likely knock out Tyrantis, although the cost would be pretty dear.
Sample Fight: King Kong nearly lost his grip when he heard the loud roar rip through the air. The sound was similar to one he had heard often on his island home: the challenging bellow of a therapod. The mighty ape looked down from his perch on the Empire State Building to see a green tyrannosaurid looking back up at him.
Tyrantis watched as the primate scrambled down the skyscraper towards him. Unlike Kong, he felt no instinctual hatred for the ape. At the same time, the mammal was food, and Tyrantis was very hungry. Had they met at another time, this confrontation may have been avoided. At the very least the jade giant would have tried to avoid it. But he was hungry, and Kong was there and full of delicious meat.
The gargantuan gorilla suddenly leapt off the building with only a few hundred feet to go (which isn’t that much to a kaiju). Tyrantis’s eyes widened as the mighty Kong landed on him, smashing the saurian onto the pavement. Kong wasted no time pummeling the tyrannosaur, but this was short lived. One punch to the reptile’s armored neck ended in Kong slitting his left wrist on one of the therapod’s spikes. The ape howled and grabbed his hand, giving Tyrantis enough time to throw the ape off himself.
Both kaiju stood back up and faced each other. Kong looked into Tyrantis’s eyes. This one wasn’t as dumb as the ones he had slain on his island home. This one was smart. This one was thinking, figuring things out. He could see it in the lizard’s eyes.
Tyrantis charged first with his jaws agape, presenting the fanged maw to Kong. The ape charged not soon after, beating his chest mid-run. Kong swung one of his great arms out a bit too soon, missing his target’s skull and, worse still, allowing Tyrantis to bite into his arm. The jade giant could have broken the limb if he bit hard enough, but instead used it to toss Kong into a nearby building. Tyrantis liked to play with his food.
Kong was not down long. Mere seconds after colliding with the building he was back on his feet and grabbing Tyrantis’s tail. One good turn deserved another as Kong chucked the reptile into another block. It was by no means a decisive blow: the green goliath quickly stood up and charged his simian foe. This time Kong’s punch connected with Tyrantis’s face. A sickening snap filled the air as Tyrantis fell down mid run, landing sprawled on the ground. Thinking his foe defeated, Kong beat his chest triumphantly.
It was quite a shock then when Tyrantis stood back up and bit into Kong’s right leg. His nervous system could heal, albeit slowly, and as such the snapping of his neck was not a mortal blow. Kong’s leg was not as resilient, and with one cloud crunch between Tyrantis’s vice-like jaws the ape’s femur shattered. Kong howled in agony and as Tyrantis let go to watch. That was a mistake. The mighty ape quickly grabbed Tyrantis and threw him again, hurtling the therapod blocks away.
As Tyrantis attempted to get up he saw Kong coming at him. Despite his newfound limp the ape was surprisingly fast. With a furious roar the primate leapt into the air. Tyrantis’s eyes widened as electricity crackled between the ape’s fingers. That was certainly unexpected. The mammoth monkey was going to slam both his fists into the fallen reptile, and if that electricity was more than a light show it was going to hurt even more than it looked. But the jade giant had a plan. He was lying on his back already with both legs facing the sky. As Kong began to fall to earth Tyrantis kicked upwards.
The blow connected and sent Kong reeling past Tyrantis. The primate landed only two hundred or so feet away from the therapod. Both kaiju stood up at the same time, but Kong stuck first. He clapped both hands around Tyrantis’s head and began to fry the reptile’s brain. When Tyrantis’s eyes rolled back into his skull Kong dropped him. The reptile was slumped on the ground, looking almost dead save for the movement of his lungs. Kong pried open the tyrannosaur’s jaws, preparing to do a finishing move that he was particularly fond of using against monstrous reptiles. He did not notice when Tyrantis’s eyes opened until fire streamed out of the dinosaur’s mouth.
Electricity crackled from Kong’s hands as the two monsters stared each other down. Kong went for the first blow, but it was Tyrantis’ attack that hit first. A jet of flame issued from the reptile’s mouth and scorched the ape’s right arm. Kong wailed and tried to put out the flame only to expose his other arm to a similar blast. Furiously the ape tried to grab Tyrantis’s head again, his hands so full of electricity that they looked like sparklers. The wily therapod leapt back, spitting a fireball as he jumped to further propel him backwards. He did not want to get caught in that electrocuting grip again.
Kong jumped after the dinosaur to close the distance between them. He raised his left fist and punched at the dinosaur. Tyrantis simply opened his mouth and bit down on the hand. Kong began to electrocute the dinosaur from the inside out only to see the reptile’s throat glow red. Fire poured out of Tyrantis’s mouth and into Kong’s hand. Seconds later the fist and half of Kong’s wrist exploded, sending bits of charred flesh and sizzling hair to the streets. On the plus side, the wound had been instantly cauterized, but it still wracked the mammal with ungodly amounts of pain.
Tyrantis quickly wrapped his jaws around Kong’s right arm while the ape moaned over its lost hand. The jade giant sunk his fangs into the gigantic limb, making Kong howl more. He was not done yet, though, as Tyrantis quickly kicked Kong with one leg while pulling on the ape’s arm. A vicious ripping sound filled the air as Tyrantis tore the arm off. The ape fell over partly in pain and partly because Tyrantis’s right leg was pushing into his chest.
Another sharp pain wracked Kong’s maimed body as Tyrantis bit into his throat. The last thing Kong felt was fire pouring into the wound and the small explosion that followed, decapitating the ape. With the Eight Wonder of the World dead, Tyrantis quickly got to the matter at hand: dinner.
