Personality:
The Harpy is a mecha. Its personality is that of Upton Solan, its pilot. Upton is a trained soldier and behaves as one. However, the Harpy's neural linking system has understandable side effects on his mentality. Namely, an adrenaline rush and a MASSIVE ego trip. From inside the Harpy's cockpit, it's as though one has literally become a giant of imeasurable strength. Upton is notably reluctant to leave the machine's cockpit, as he feels he's a god when plugged into it. He often leaps and bounds from point to point, acting all too elaborate and flashy in his movements. In a way, combat becomes a game for the soldier, as demonstrated by his obviously playful manner inside the machine.
Origin Story:
During her initial battle with Wendigo, Rygama lost an arm. After the carnage was over, it was only natural that the Australian government took the severed member in for study. From this broken appendage, a whole world of discoveries were made. Not the least dramatic being what its creators dubbed "neuromorphic technology". This new breed of technology was composed of silicon chips, modeled after the entity that it was derived from. With only raw material and a specialized linkup to the user's mind, it could self-assemble based on the user's thoughts.
An independent technology development corporation was the lucky developer of this technology. Rather than reveal this right away, the corporate head decided to try a different approach. The company was known for military ties, so he was given the go ahead for a top secret weapons project, designed specifically to take on giant monsters.
Months passed and the number of monsters grew immensely. The time came for the tech to be put to the test. The blueprints had been constructed for a battle machine, toting hyper-dense blade weapons, supported on artificial muscle chords designed to react to the pilot's neural stimulus. The machine was purposely showy and over the top, intended to drive home the power and wonder that the technology could create. The corporation intended to make the machine's use the world's largest publicity stunt. The world would shudder in awe at the mech's victory!
Upton Solan was selected to pilot the machine. A trained Australian soldier, Upton was a high-ranking officer in his department and was a major reason that the company had been allowed to construct the ridiculous robot in the first place. He managed to convince his superiors that it wasn't a waste of taxpayers' money. He personally trained to sit at the driver's seat of the warmachine, while two others were to ride onboard as mechanics.
The ridiculously stylized robot was nicknamed "The Harpy" for its quasi-avian appearance, and because the initial name "Red Bird" was bloody stupid.
The Harpy was put to the test when Rygama neared the Australian coast. The Harpy was deployed, backed up by light support. Artillery units goaded Rygama ashore, preying on her instinctive aggression. Upton, however, found himself drawn to the thrill. His nervous system was linked to the Harpy. In essence, it was his new body, and he was a giant! The thrill grew too much. As Rygama shrugged off the weapons fire, Upton felt the risk of simply driving her off was too great. He leaped into the water, engaging Rygama in her own element.
The battle was fierce, the Harpy putting up a shocking struggle. Despite this, Rygama exhibited a casual, almost playful approach to the battle, repeatedly taunting her aggressors, only to slip out of reach.
The tide was turned when Upton managed to drag Rygama ashore, leveling the playing field. During their brawl, the Harpy even managed to sever one of Rygama's wings, grounding her. Rygama was forced to rip off her other wing, lest it weigh her down. The two continued to brawl all the more viciously.
However, disaster struck when Rygama managed to deliver a telling blow, striking the cockpit, severing Upton's connection with the machine - as well as his right arm.
Rygama trashed the warbot before picking up her wings and heading back into the ocean.
The Harpy was taken in for repairs. The corporation as well as the military funding her furious, thinking the machine to have been an obvious waste of time and money. Earlier, much simpler machines had been more effective in subduing monsters. The project was immediately scrapped.
However, Upton would have none of this. He had been given a taste of the Harpy's power and now he wanted more! Fortune smiled on him, as a fatal weakness was discovered in Rygama: Hemotoxins. If enough were administered, the swelling would theoretically tear her apart! Unfortunately, it couldn't be guaranteed that the specialized turrets that were commissioned for the task of administering it would work. And so, with some careful persuasion, the Harpy was repaired and recommissioned as a support weapon, intended to keep Rygama distracted and, if necessary, finish her off.
Upton was once again placed in the driver's seat. He was a giant once more. A giant with both arms, at that!
Rygama returned soon, pursuing a mutant nautillus to shore. She was greeted with a painful welcome of venomous missiles. Harpy confronted her again and the battle began anew.
However, just as it began to heat up, a new party arrived. A city-sized, saucer-shaped aircraft descended upon the city, halting the conflict. A new threat was about to emerge. And this time, man and monster would be forced to unite to stand against it.
Special Abilities:
The Harpy is a quick, agile powerhouse. Artificial muscle chords provide lifelike flexibility as well as strength rivaling Rygama's. The Harpy's lifting capacity is clocked at more or less 90,000 tons, though with exertion on the pilot's end, greater limits are possible.
Boosters and extending muscle chords allow the Harpy tremendous leaps and bounds. Tough armor allows it to weather intense beatings.
The Harpy's signature qualities, however, are the immense, pivoting blades growing from the arms. These blades are virtually indestructible and with enough force behind them, are capable of cleaving through even the most durable of flesh.
Finally, the Harpy's experimental neuromorphic technology invests in a brief boost system which momentarily increases the mecha's speed and reaction time by 60%. This places strain on the pilot, however, and may only be employed for one minute before the failsafe terminates the boost, leaving a notably fatigued pilot behind.
Combat style:
The Harpy fights exactly as a trained soldier who's just been made hundreds of feet high and granted limitless strength would. Martial combat maneuvers are common in his style, yet notably flashy stunts are also very frequent. His blades are his primary weapons, though they don't overshadow a well timed punch, kick or throw where appropriate. In many ways, the Harpy fights like a grit-ified sentai hero. When all else fails, he doesn't object to a good old fashioned head-crushing.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
The Harpy is strong, tough and quick. Very much so in all departments. Its strength is able to contend with Rygama's own, and its speed is unquestionable. Its pliable muscle system and durable armor ensure that it lasts quite a while against even the worst beatings. The blades mounted on its forearms pack exceptional cutting power, allowing it to penetrate even the greatest of armor with enough momentum. Eye-like sensors around its body allow it to maintain some knowledge of its environment from all sides, though attention dispersal is another issue altogether.
On the downside, the Harpy is lacking in ranged weapons, devoting its entirety to movement and close combat purposes. In addition, Upton is neurally linked to the machine. This means that though it moves and senses like a real animal, it also has a habit of transmitting pain to its pilot, albeit at a reduced level. Damage to the body is felt by Upton as a brief jolt of pain in the same general region.
Upton's piloting skills are also a factor. Though he's well-trained and motivated to get the job done, he can't resist the opportunity to play around a little and will often postpone a deathblow in favor of continuing the struggle.
Sample Fight:
Monster X roared menacingly as he levitated anime-style into the midst of Sydney. He had no real reason to be here, but his agent had told him that there was big money in brief cameos such as this. He halfheartedly kicked over a building to amuse himself.
On que, an immense figure leaped into view, bounding high above one of the skyscrapers, doing a frontflip in the air and landing before the alien beast, striking a ridiculous martial pose.
Monster X assumed a forward stance, snorting at his new enemy. Things were about to get good.
The Harpy was first to react, crouching low and leaping straight up, doing another frontflip and sticking its right foot out, bringing it down at Monster X's head in an exaggerated hatchet-kick.
Monster X snarled, bringing both hands up and catching the Harpy's foot mere feet above his head.
The Harpy, however, reacted just as quickly, lashing out with his other foot and stomping into Monster X's head, kicking off of it and jumping out of his grasp, flipping back and landing on the street two blocks back. The machine quickly resumed a forward stance.
Monster X threw out his arms, projecting two screaming pairs of golden bolts. The blasts twisted through the air before striking the Harpy's chest, sending the mech onto its back.
Monster X advanced, not at all surprised as the Harpy jumped back to its feet, guarding itself the moment it did. Monster X continued to advance, ready for whatever the Harpy had up its sleeve - or so he thought.
The humanoid warmachine charged, bounding for Monster X at breakneck speeds. With a booster-aided bound, the Harpy's toes were before Monster X's feet and proceded to rapidly pound themselves into the alien's chest and central skull. Eleven kicks hammered into the alien warbeast, the last five of them cracking into the hard, bony armor, sending chips flying.
The Harpy kicked off, flipping back again and landing on its feet another two blocks back.
Monster X shook his head, clearing the pounding in his skull. That had been a bitch...
The Harpy remained on guard, watching Monster X. Upton knew it was foolish, but he couldn't help himself. He couldn't bring himself to end this battle too quickly. He craved the suspense and power that came from pitched combat inside this machine! Still, he couldn't afford to be foolish. As the alien's eyes lit up, the machine leaped. As the golden blasts snaked towards the robot, zipping beside, then spiraling inwards to nail the Harpy between them, the mech twisted and barrell-rolled out of the path of the beams, sticking out its foot and dropkicking Monster X right in the cranium.
Another loud crack tore through the air as the black and white beast fell, its upper body boring into the concrete streets. The Harpy pressed its foot deeper against Monster X's skull, bringing it up again and stomping the beast into the pavement.
Monster X responded by raising its foot and slamming it into the Harpy's backside, knocking it right off of him. He wasted no time rolling out of the crater and standing. He delivered a second kick to the Harpy's rear as the machine struggled to its feet, only to be knocked back onto is stomach.
Monster X charged the downed warmachine, driving a soccer-kick into its side, sending it flying not less than three blocks into the city.
Monster X cackled gleefully, stomping slowly to where his adversarry lay in a heap atop a pile of what had once been a hospital.
Upton groaned as he brought his mech back to its feet. He stared at the ruined building beneath him. Dammit! Thanks to that adrenaline rush, this had happened! He had to finish this quickly and stop playing around. The Harpy's dorsal receptors picked up Monster X approaching from behind. Upton waited, allowing the alien to get within range, then struck! One of the machine's legs lashed out with everything it was worth, nailing Monster X square in the gut. The alien beast didn't just fall this time. He went *flying*!
The Harpy scrambled to its feet as Monster X crashed into a (thankfully evacuated) office building. Both collapsed into the earth.
The Harpy charged as Monster X rose, bellowing in outrage. He was greeted by a sharp punch to the face, knocking out two teeth. With bleeding jaws, Monster X spotted Upton's next move, raising his palm as a second punch flew at him. The alien effortlessly caught the blow, giving slightly from the momentum but remaining in control. He caught a third punch, now gripping both of the mech's hands like a vice. It struggled helplessly, much to the alien's delight - then promptly brought both knees up and clamped them around Monster X's head. With a valiant swing of its wieght, the Harpy hefted Monster X into the air, flipping backwards, swinging its captive overhead and driving it face-first into the shredded street. Monster X found itself buried up to its shoulders upside-down in the concrete.
The Harpy righted itself, lashing out and kicking the warbeast's spine, ripping him out of the ground and knocking him over onto his stomach. As he scrambled to his feet, he slammed another kick into its stomach - only for Monster X to catch it in his hands. The alien seized the moment, swinging the Harpy around and around, finally releasing it into the city.
The Harpy landed gracelessly not less than ten blocks back, crashing through buildings. And still it rose, ignoring the dents in its armor. Upton would finish this now!
Monster X cackled, ready for whatever his opponent could dish out.
The Harpy faced its enemy, resuming a forward stance - then abruptly broke it and charged headlong as his adversary. Monster X did the same, ready to rip into his enemy with his bare hands! The two both leaned forward, putting everything they were worth into this charge! When two blocks separated them, both leaped into the air as one, destined to collide. A clawed hand ripped through the Harpy's side, tearing off a large chunk of plate armor. Its armblades extended, swinging with all the mecha's strength, right into Monster X's face.
The Harpy landed on its knees, several hundred feet behind its enemy. Its side had been ripped open, one of its breastplates completely uprooted and anchored into Monster X's claws. Blood dripped from its blade.
And Monster X's severed head flew hundreds of feet, high over the Australian cityscape, casting a ridiculously dramatic silouhette against the full moon.
