Name: Typhon Island
Story appearances: The Terror of Tyrantis and its sequels.
Size: 52 square miles of land
Description: A large island with three fresh water lakes (all of which drain into the ocean) and gargantuan, jagged cliffs located off the coasts of San Francisco.
Hazards and Notable Landmarks: Three lakes exist within the island, although only one is notable. In the south east corner of the island (and by that I mean the south east corner of the image above), there is a lake that’s completely taken over by the kaiju Ullawdra, an animate plant kaiju. While her main body lies in the center of the lake, her vines stretch all the way to the shore. Any moving object that gets close to the lake will immediately be attacked by these vines, which will try to pull the creature closer to the center of the lake. A kaiju can break free of these with some work, but they would leave winded after having been almost strangled. A weakened kaiju could be thrown in the lake by a stronger opponent if the foe was smart enough.
Name: Kaiju Canyons
Story appearances: Area 51 Unleashed
Size: 30 square miles
Description: A series of canyons blocked off by (easily destroyed) man made walls.
Hazards and Notable Landmarks: Follow the picture above, starting from the top left area, to understand this list.
Entrance. The rock wall would collapse at the beginning of the fight, opening the way to...
Canyon 1: The two pinkish blobs are giant ant hills, filled with 5 meter tall giant ants. Said ants would only attack should the anthills be disturbed. They can’t do a lot of damage to kaiju, serving as more of an irritant than a damaging hazard, but they’ll attack until the kaiju break into...
Canyon 2: Basically a flat landscape. That discolored part is actually the lair of a giant trap door spider. Said spider isn’t really a hazard, though, since all it does is leap out at kaiju to scare them away (essentially doing the monster equivalent of yelling “Boo.”). He will keep up this threat display until they leave Canyon 2, since every time they attack him he’ll return to his hiding spot very quickly.
Canyon3: It’s pretty much barren. The battle could end here, or it could move on to...
Canyon 4: With several plateaus for kaiju to climb, some human bunkers, and some automated missile launchers strapped to the walls of the canyon, this is probably the most fun part of the environment. The missiles do no more damage than they would in a standard kaiju flick, so they shouldn’t be more than a pest to most kaiju.
Name: Martian Campsite
Story appearances: Kaiju Chronicles of Mars
Size: 43.6 square miles
Description: A large, circular section of Martian landscape. One half of the circle is blocked off from the rest of Mars by a mountain range, and the other by a deep trench. The circle itself consists of the very rough terrain of Mars (i.e. a curvy landscape that even a vehicle built for off-road transport on earth would have extreme trouble getting across, with steep hills and valleys). Near the center lies a huge basin with steep walls that is very hard to get out of. Opposite it stand a large collection of Martian war machines, which form a “city.”
Hazards and Notable Landmarks: As stated above, there is a deep basin near the center of the battlefield. A kaiju that falls in there could easily be stuck there for the rest of the battle if it can’t climb or fly well.
The tripod “city” could also be a hazard. Each tripod war machine stands ten meters tall and 7.5 meters wide. They function very similar to tanks on earth, except they’re far more agile and carry heat rays instead of shells. The heat rays burn everything they touch, although it would take a while for them to burn a kaiju since they were designed to take out creatures that are roughly human sized. The tripods, numbered 50 strong, can be destroyed just as easily as tanks on earth, and can be avoided completely if the kaiju in the battle don’t attack them. Personality is a big factor concerning this hazard.
Finally, the oxygen level at the Martian campsite is similar to that of the highest point of a mountain: enough to support earth life in the short term, but enough exposure will make an earth animal pass out. The lower gravity makes up for this slightly, as the earth kaiju would be much stronger and faster than they are on earth, but they’d also tire out much quicker as a result. This means the battle would be much faster than one on earth.
What do ya think, sirs?
